Prof. Abbas Ali Mahdi after obtaining Ph.D. degree from the Faculty of Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh in 1989, moved to the Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, and thereafter, on October 1, 1991 he joined the department of Biochemistry, KG. Medical College, Lucknow, as a Research Associate and was subsequently appointed as Lecturer (1994), then Assistant Professor (1999), promoted as Associate Professor (2003) and then Professor in 2005 and is presently working as the Head of the Department since 2010. After taking over as Head of the Department he has totally transformed the Department of Biochemistry. Now it is amongst one of the best Biochemistry departments in the country, with all modern and upto date facilities, including the National Referral Centre for Lead Poisoning – India, Cell Culture, Molecular Biology, Natural Products and Clinical Biochemistry & Immunology Labs.
At K.G. Medical Univefrsity, Dr. Mahdi, has the distinction of being the founder Incharge of three prestigious projects at King George’s Medical University, i.e. the New Emergency Complex & Trauma Centre (2003), Centenary Hospital (2011) & Centre for Advance Research (2013).
Dr. Mahdi has been instrumental in establishing and running successfully the first apex Trauma Centre and New Emergency Complex of the State of Uttar Pradesh. For excellent management of the services Dr. Mahdi was awarded the “University Appreciation Award” at the 3rd Convocation of the King George’s Medical University. The award was handed over by His Excellency the Governor of Uttar Pradesh Shri T.V. Rajeshwar on 22nd January 2007.
Dr. Mahdi was instrumental in implementing “Patient Welfare Society” for running the Trauma Centre at KGMU. It started with the establishment of Drug Distribution Centres (DDCs). Quality medicines were made available to the patients admitted at Trauma Centre and other departments of KGMU from these centres on minimum 32% discount on the maximum retail price of the medicines and other consumables. The society now has annual turnover of over of more than Rs. 15 cores. After passing on a discount of about Rs. 4.0 crores to the patients, Society still saves about Rs. 1.5 crores annually. This money is not only utilized for providing free medicines and investigations to the poor and destitute, but is also utilized for the running and maintenance of equipment and providing services for which funds could not be immediately made available. Moreover, the working of the Society has been the topic of dissertation of many Master of Business Administration students.
Dr. Mahdi has vast administrative experience and he has worked on a number of administrative posts. He has the distinction of being the Chief Proctor, Acting Registrar, Officiating Controller of Examinations, Officiating Medical Superintendent, Provost and member of many academic and administrative committees. He has also been the Coordinator/Co-Coordinator of a number of national and state level competitive medical entrance examinations including prestigious UPPGMEE and CPMT. Dr. Mahdi is a member of Academic Council, Board of Studies, Research & Development Councils and Board of Assessors/Inspectors of many Institutions/Universities including the Medical Council of India. Dr. Mahdi has been the U.G., P.G. and Ph.D. examiner of many foreign and Indian Institutions. He is an Editor, member of the Editorial Board and reviewer of many national and international journals.
Dr. Mahdi has been a visiting Professor to Peoples Republic of China and has been the M.B.B.S. examiner in China and Mauritius. He has been invited as the external faculty at a number of National and International Workshops, Seminars and Symposia in India and abroad. Prof. Mahdi has organized about a dozen largely attended highly successful national and International conferences, symposium and workshops.
Prof. Mahdi has been actively involved in many scientific Societies and he has been the founder member of three very active and vibrant academic National bodies, Society for Free Radical Research – India (SFRR – India), Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences (IABS) & Indian Society for Lead Awareness & Research (InSLAR). He is the Vice President of SFRR – India, Founder Secretary General of IABS and Founder President of InSLAR.
Dr. Mahdi has guided more than twenty Ph.D. students thesis, got funds from all the funding agencies (total 29 major funded projects), published over 175 research papers in national and international journals, including twelve books chapters. His research work has till date received over 1000 citations in international scientific literature.
